Dating Site Reviewed by Experts, Episode Five

Today we will be talking about the SEO parameters and best practices for the What’s Your Price website that we reviewed design-wise and functionality-wise in one of the earlier episodes.

Let’s start with taking a look at the domain name of the site. According to the whois data, it’s almost 19 years old, and it is an advantage because search engines tend to give priority to the older, well-established domain names. As compared to the relatively new domain names, when people are searching by the same keywords.
According to the site statistics from February 2018, the total number of visitors was 1.776 million. The number of monthly unique visitors exceeded 400 thousand people. This is a very good number for a niche dating service.
The overwhelming majority of visitors came to the WYP website from their mobile devices, 84.26%. What does it mean? The site is mobile-friendly so the people are able to browse it freely from their smaller screens. Another proof that this site is user-friendly is the pages per visit parameter — 6.72, and the relatively low bounce rate of 25.42%.
Then there is the gender and age distribution. Seeing as this site is another take on the sugar daddy/sugar baby interactions, it’s meant to attract a large number of male users. Men are supposed to make the majority of payments and thus bring profit to the site owners.
Now, let’s overview the traffic channels, that is where people are coming to the site from. As we can see, direct traffic brings the most visitors, which means that people either know the URL of the site or have bookmarked it.
Or, they use the search queries in the search engines that bring them exactly here. It usually means that the site owners use the right keywords to promote their site. And this is called organic traffic which we see is the second most effective channel for the WYP site.
It would be interesting and enlightening to know the conversion rate from each of the channels. Do this research on your site, and you’ll find out which of the channels bring you the most profit, and you’ll be able to concentrate your efforts on them.
What concerns the social traffic, Facebook and YouTube have been the most popular media in February. Instagram and Reddit come next. The owners have been doing a good job of promoting their site on social networks, with new posts appearing regularly up to a certain point. Although, they seem to have abandoned the promotion at the end of March and now seem to wish to put the business up for sale.
Next, let’s take a look at the robots.txt file. Simply put, this file informs web crawlers about the parts of the site that should not be processed or scanned. As we can see, with the WYP site they have not set any limits.
The robots.txt protocol is very useful if you want the search engines to ignore any duplicate pages on your website. With the WYP site, the pages of their deleted users are still available in the search results. When found and opened, such pages send the 200 response and take visitors to a placeholder page of no particular value and thus allow duplicates of this same page to exist across the search results.
A more user-friendly solution would be to set up the 302 redirect and take people to the search results page displaying profiles similar to the one whose profile we were trying to visit.
While the major part of the site content is handled by the blog, the site owners have also created special pages that answer to particular — and popular — search queries, for example, “name your price”, “millionaire dating”, and so on. These pages point to the registration page of the site potentially increasing the conversion rate.
