China Dating Apps Add Controversial Tracking Services
Intrusive aspects of the tracking service include mutual sharing of smartphone usage time, battery level, network status, and screen unlock history. However, the effectiveness of these features in improving relationships is questionable, as they seem to be exacerbating existing problems. Some users have reported issues with the accuracy of the tracking data, leading to further relationship tensions. One user had to resort to spending over $110 on a third-party verification service to prove her innocence due to inaccurate data reports from the app.
Despite user dissatisfaction, these features are proving successful for the app companies, as they target a new demographic: those already in relationships. The companies are generating revenue through in-app paid premium features and new paying subscribers. To mitigate the tensions created by the tracking features, the apps are also introducing complementary features like “make-up cards.”
This trend of incorporating tracking features in dating apps highlights concerns about “relationship surveillance” and potential abuse by users who are already suspicious or abusive towards their partners. It also raises questions about government tracking and the storage of personal data.
